Today we visited the West Super-Regional Championship Tournament for the FIRST Tech Challenge. What does that mean? Robots!
This is a middle and high school student tournament involving robots. Schools from around the world compete to build robots that must meet a series of challenges in a game setting. They are each given kits that have the same parts, which means that the teams must figure out how to use the same resources to design the best robots. Then, the teams compete in a series of games. The west super-regional championship is in Oakland, California, at the Oakland Convention Center, from March 27-29 (final rounds are on March 29th). The top teams advance to the world championship later this year in St. Louis.
The kids are very enthusiastic and seem to be having a lot of fun. The event places great emphasis on "gracious professionalism." No one is humiliated. There's a place for everyone.
