A teacher of my son's read the book, Shelby and the Brave Little Pup of San Simeon Bay, by Julia Stanert and illustrated by Jayne Koontz.
My son learned that elephant seals are usually born in a protected area called a rookery. A rookery is an area of beach where large numbers of elephant seals are born. Ano Nuevo is a popular rookery. Four miles north of San Simeon, where the story takes place, is another rookery.
