Book of the Week - Flight

Billy's favorite Book today is Flight:  A Pop-Up Book of Aircraft by Robert Crowther.  It is a fantastic pop-up book that discusses the history of flight, from the first man-made object to fly (a Chinese kite) to NASA's X-43A Scramjet.  Our son's favorite page?  A pop-up of the cockpit of a Boeing 747, complete with two control columns and a throttle!

Billy's favorite plane in the book is the Bell X-1.  In 1947, Chuck yeager became the first person to travel faster than the speed of sound.  While he was piloting the Bell X-1, Yeager reached a record breaking 700 miles per hour.  Billy said, "Did you see how fast that goes!  I want to go as fast as that goes!"

Billy also enjoyed reading about the R-4 helicopter.  The Russian born engineer, Igor Sikorsky, built and flew this first practical helicopter in 1939.   A year later, the U.S. Army hired him to build the first  military helicopter, the R-4.
