Book Recommendation: Hairs and Pelitos by Sandra Cisneros

We were at the Rockridge Street festival in the Rockridge district of Oakland, California today and I stopped at a table set up by the book business Ashay By The Bay.  The company specializes in African and multi-cultural children's books and educational services.  The website is also really helpful as it gives book suggestions by age and grade level.  I was looking for a few bilingual to read my son at night at bedtime, the owner recommended Hairs and Pelitos by Sandra Cisneros.  This jewel-like vignette, shows through simple, intimate portraits, the diversity among us.  It is for ages five to eight, and talks about differences in hair color and quality, even in one family.  My son loved it, and they are talking about differences color and hair even in kindergarten.  Sandra Cisneros also wrote The House on Mango Street which is for older children, grades 6-8
